Showa 1939-1944: a history of Japan continues award-winning cartoonist Shigeru Mizuki's multivolume masterwork. Showcasing why he is Japan's most famous and important manga-ka, this volume of Showa chronicles the devastating sino-Japaneese war, the attack on pearl harbour, and the start of the pacific war. Mizuki employs a realistic approach to drive home the harsh reality of Japanese life from a national perspective, while using a cartoony style to narrate his own experiences as a soldier in the imperial army. Showa is spellbinding in its own scope as both historical overview of Japans most tumultuous years and as Misuki's own memoir. Originally serialised in Japanese in 1988, it won the kodansha manga award in 1989, the same year Showa emperor Hirohito died.
